Nektar’s debut album became one of their finest releases, saturated with abstract psychedelia and a wonderful science-fiction motif that is magnified through the rigorous but dazzling Mellotron of Allan Freeman and Roye Albrighton’s nomadic guitar playing. Throughout Journey’s 13 cuts, Nektar introduced their own sort of instrumental surrealism that radiated from both the vocals and from the intermingling of the haphazard drum and string work. With the synthesizer churning and boiling in front of Howden’s percussive attack and Mick Brockett’s “liquid lights,” tracks like “Astronaut’s Nightmare,” “It’s All in the Mind,” and both “Dream Nebula” cuts teeter back and forth from mind-numbing, laid-back melodies to excitable, open-ended excursions of fantastical progressive rock. Just as Hawkwind was exploring the depths of outer space with their progressive tendencies on most of their albums, Journey to the Centre of the Eye musically probed the inner universe of the mind and body with its very own conceptual field trip. “Burn Out My Eyes” and “Warp Oversight” are let loose with buzz-saw vocals and hazy, undefined guitar chords which converge and fade into background rhythms, while the 54 seconds of “Look Inside Yourself” is a short, illusory voyage that ends too soon. Very good prog with some influences from space rockers like Pink Floyd, but other influences from the prog of say, King Crimson, Yes and maybe ELP, though not as dominated by keyboard virtuosity like ELP. The prominent Mellotron gives this album a great Crimson feel, though there is no sax. “Countenance” has some fantastic guitar work and haunting electric keyboard. “Warp Oversight” shows some resemblance to “Interstellar Overdrive” with it’s interesting keyboard effects and fractured guitar. “The Dream Nebula (Pt. 1)” and it’s second part on side two have some pretty ferocious guitar work at times and some more prog-like keyboard sections with vocals mixed in. “It’s All in the Mind” is another fantastic track with great lyrics and layers of keyboard, bass, and guitar sound…Bob Hope

And as for Bless It’s Pointed Little Head, I am sure there is stuff here that would have been
included if the album had been a CD instead of an LP. To me, this disc is like finding the JA
holy grail.”

Won’t You Try, the start of which is cut. I edited out all the useless silent gaps especially
the original track 2 of the rehearsals (12 secs. of silence!) and the silent gap between
Saturday Afternoon and White Rabbit on the live stuff. I edited out some smaller silent gaps
on the live stuff and cut down the appropriate silence at the end of Martha from 9 secs. to 2
secs. Also edited out a small pop at about 3:05 of White Rabbit.

I then broke up the cut Won’t You Try Saturday Afternoon/White Rabbit into separate tracks and
then did the same for Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil > House at Pooneil Corner. I added a fade
at the end of Somebody To Love during the applause and a fade in to the cut Won’t You Try
Saturday Afternoon to try and ease the transition a bit.

Clássico contemporâneo, “Moon Safari”, o primeiro álbum da dupla francesa Air, completou dez anos há poucos dias e ganhou edição especial e tripla, com DVD, remixes etc. Aqui você ouve dois ótimos remixes de músicas desse disco. Primeiro a banda Moog Cookbook injeta soul anos 70 na etérea “Kelly Watch the Stars”, que fica pulsantemente negra. Depois Beck remistura “Sexy Boy”, como um animal glutão. E pronto.

Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film.

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.
The Pangea Day Event

Starting at 18:00 GMT on May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire program will be broadcast – in seven languages – to millions of people worldwide through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

The 24 short films to be featured have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over one hundred countries. The films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and allow us see the world through another person’s eyes. Details on the Pangea Day films can be viewed here.

The program will also include a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among those taking part.
What Will Happen After Pangea Day

Ray Davies é simplesmente um dos grandes genios que a Inglaterra produziu durante os 60. Merece um posto ao lado de Syd Barrett, Brian Jones, David Bowie e Pete Townshend.

Morre Albert Hoffman, pai do LSD

Albert Hofmann, pai do alucinógeno conhecido como LSD (sigla para dietilamida do ácido lisérgico, em inglês), morreu nesta terça-feira (29), aos 102 anos.

Hofmann morreu em sua casa, na cidade de Basel, vítima de um ataque cardíaco, afirmou Rick Doblin, presidente da Associação Interdisciplinar de Estudos da Psicodelia, em uma notícia divulgada no site da instituição.

Hofmann, que nasceu em 1906 na cidade de Baden, descobriu o LSD em 1943, quando trabalhava nos laboratórios Sandoz, atualmente parte do grupo farmacêutico Novartis.

“Eu tive de deixar o trabalho e ir pra casa porque fui acometido por uma repentina sensação de desconforto e uma leve vertigem”, escreveu em um relatório, ao falar sobre sua primeira experiência com a droga.

Ele realizava experiências para desenvolver um estimulante circulatório e respiratório, quando descobriu a droga. Foi cobaia de sua própria descoberta.

“Tudo o que eu via estava distorcido como em um espelho ondulado”, afirmou, lembrando de seu retorno para casa. Três dias depois de sua primeira experimentação, Hofmann aumentou a dose e acabou em uma alucinação traumática, conhecida como “bad trip” (viagem ruim, em inglês).

Hippies

O LSD é uma droga com efeitos alucinógenos e foi a mais consumida dentro do movimento hippie nos anos 60. Depois disso, acabou sendo proibida e perdeu popularidade até os anos 90, quando voltou à tona entre os fãs de música eletrônica.

“Trata-se de um produto muito especial que atua na consciência, que é, afinal de contas, o que nos distingue dos animais”, afirmou o químico, acrescentando que sob os efeitos do LSD, “vemos, ouvimos e sentimos de forma diferente e intensa, mesmo com uma dose ínfima”.

Hoffman sempre defendeu sua descoberta. “Eu produzi a substância como um remédio.. não tenho culpa se as pessoas abusaram dele”, disse.

Entre 1947 e 1966, a Sandoz manufaturou o LSD em cápsulas e ampolas para utilização médica em tratamentos psiquiátricos e neurológicos, mas adquiriu uma má reputação por abusos em seu consumo –o que resultou no fim da produção.

Em declarações à imprensa de seu país, na ocasião de seus cem anos, Hofmann confessou não estar surpreso pelo fato de ter entrado para a história apenas por causa do LSD, apesar de ter feito outras descobertas.
