Eagles of Death Metal (EoDM) is an American band formed by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. Despite the name, Eagles of Death Metal is not a death metal band. Hughes in an interview with a Polish rock magazine Teraz Rock told the story of the band’s name. He said that his friend, Lou, was trying to make Josh Homme like death metal. When he played Vader, Homme called them “The Eagles of death metal.” Later, Josh Homme inspired him to write music that he thought would be The Eagles crossed with death metal, and their debut album was the result. In a 2003 interview Homme described the sound of the band as a combination of “bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals.” Jesse Hughes is known and somewhat loved by fans for his over-enthusiastic and charismatic interaction with audiences at live performances.

The album was recorded primarily by Jesse Hughes (credited as “J. Devil Huge” or “Mr. Boogie Man”) and Josh Homme (credit as “Carlo von Sexron” or “Baby Duck”), and featured guest appearances by Tim Vanhamel (dEUS, Millionaire, Evil Superstars), Brody Dalle (The Distillers), Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, The Dwarves, Mondo Generator), and Alain Johannes & Natasha Shneider (Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions).

Josh Homme told MTV News that the band is led by Hughes. “I just sit behind the drums and play rock and roll, which is a great change of pace for me. J. Devil writes everything, every lyric and riff, and he’s a fantastic songwriter. He and I go through and arrange them, and I lay down harmonies, but it’s really his thing. It’s the antithesis of the bloated rock-attitude bullshit I’ve had to deal with recently”. Josh Homme promoted the band when appearing on the Lollapalooza tour in 2003 wearing an Eagles of Death Metal t-shirt.

Inspired by a mutual obsession with The Velvet Underground, ‘70s London and New York punk, they formed a duo called The Kills, rejected everything they’d begun to hate about being in a rock band, got themselves signed to Domino and made a spectacularly sexy garage-punk album called Keep On Your Mean Side in 2003. Buoyed by the deserved critical acclaim for this and their incendiary early live shows, but also nonplussed by the fact that they were, once again, in a proper band with a record deal, they made a completely different, yet equally spectacular second album in 2005 called No Wow. A minimalist pop masterpiece, it was one of those records that made some into Kills fans for life, but most utterly confused. “No Wow’s really special to me,” reckons a defiant Jamie. “I was listening to lots of Cabaret Voltaire and Suicide, and wanted to make something stripped-down, and was determined not to make another garage-rock record like the first album. We were trying to make a Suicide record. More like a commercial suicide record…”
